HKC On the Road: Flemingsburg, KY
January 15, 2015
Recent Balance My Day (BMD) trainings will assure that students in the Flemingsburg, KY, school district learn about and experience healthy eating and fun physical activity in a number of different places during their school day. School food service managers who attended the School Foodservice BMD workshop were interested to find out that when school districts schedule recess before lunch, student consumption of meals improves. As a result of BMD training, several managers planned to pursue this scheduling option in their schools. The next day P.E. Teachers, Cooperative Extension Educators and Youth Service Center workers joined together for a day of Balance My Day Training for teachers and other KidLinks. As a result of their training,
- P.E. teachers designed a human scavenger hunt to teach healthy snacking concepts;
- Cooperative Extension educators planned a paper chain activity to teach MyPlate concepts in their after school Healthy Divas Program and
- Youth Service Center workers discussed how to use a label reading game to help families get more for their money at the grocery store.
Thanks to the BMD Training and Curriculum, Flemingsburg, KY school staff are equipped to promote healthy eating and fun physical activity throughout the school day and beyond! “Yes, I’d recommend the SPARK Programs workshops to others. The trainer used innovative and up-to-date resources and ideas to teach such important topics.” -Candy Dales, Flemingsburg Elementary School.
