Overview: The State of Childhood Obesity in America
April 5, 2010
Healthy Kids Challenge will be sharing a series of policy briefs regarding child obesity from Health Affairs, a journal of health policy thought and research…along with our simple, every day, evidence-based solutions.
What will it take to make significant inroads against child obesity?
From Health Affairs, more experts no longer see obesity as a matter determined solely by personal responsibility; they believe that there needs to be collective responsibility for taking on the problem along the lines of the movement to fight smoking and tobacco. Studies using laboratory animals show that the animals gain weight when their environment promotes foods high in sugar and fat, and that even when healthy foods are freely available, the animals eat the unhealthy ones, gaining much weight and exhibiting deteriorating health.
Healthy Kids Challenge provides schools and youth programs help developing a healthier environment with HKC-SPARK IGNITE Trainings and the School Challenge Distance Assistance Program. These services provide guidance to add more minutes of physical activity to the day, healthy eating activities in the classroom, and easy ways to support families with healthy change.
What are your ideas for healthier environments that promote healthy eating and physical activity for kids?
