Fruits and Veggies Every Day the Tasty Way

January 18, 2010

Let’s have a little fun with the words of the title of one of our 6 core healthy behaviors: Fruits and Veggies Every Day the Tasty Way which helps with increasing fruit and vegetable consumption. Our Partner In Health, Del Monte, offers many healthy, affordable fruit and veggie solutions with its canned fruit and vegetable products. Remember fresh, frozen, canned, or dried – all forms of fruits and veggies are nutritious!

Fruits – Focus on increasing the number of cups of fruit you eat by starting with just 1/2 cup more at a meal time. Try eating your fruit first for a change of pace!
Veggies – Vary the colors on your plate to get the most nutrients and lots of flavor. Vary the colors at each meal: if you had orange for breakfast, have other colors for the rest of the day.
Every Day – Do you eat fruits and veggies every day? Be honest. How many of us can say I ate fruit and I ate veggies today? For a lot of people it’s one or the other, but not both. French fries and ketchup do not count!
Tasty WayDel Monte’s free downloadable recipe book offers several very tasty recipes that incorporate affordable canned fruits and vegetables and short ingredient lists. In fact, many of the recipes can be made for $10 or less. Browse around their site and find some new favorites, like Zesty Corn Quesadillas with Spinach Salad or the Breakfast Express Smoothie. Enjoy!

We all need to eat more fruits and veggies at our house. These tips help! In fact, last night at dinner, I cut up some fruit slices and put on my kids' plates. They were so hungry when they came to the table, that they ate those right away, before we served the other foods. It was a great way to get an extra serving of fruit in their day! I'm going to do the same with raw veggies, to get them to eat those first, like an appetizer!
