Healthy Behaviors Begin With the End

Healthy behaviors are the desired outcome at Healthy Kids Challenge.  We always begin with that end in mind.  Imagine a balance scale with healthy behaviors hanging on the top of one side and unhealthy behaviors on the bottom of other side.  Your school or youth program may start there, or with many healthy behaviors in place, or anywhere in between. 

From the beginning, we know we want these outcomes in the end:

  • increased fruit and vegetable intake
  • increased physical activity
  • breakfast as a regular habit
  • healthier snack choices
  • healthier drink choices
  • smart serving sizes

Then we start where you are – hanging anywhere in the balance – and tailor our assistance to tip the scale in favor of your needed healthy behaviors.  Getting from point A to point B is a process that we work on together.  Often it takes a little work on improving knowledge, skills, and attitudes, and a lot of flexibility! 

In fact, we may not reach the desired healthy behavior; instead, a more POSITIVE attitude toward that behavior may develop.  Remember to shoot for the moon.  Even if you miss, you’ll still land among the stars, right?  And the scales still tip a little further toward health!

    I get discouraged when I set my hopes too high. I see that I need to be more realistic and be satisfied with small change.
