All 5 Healthy Kids Challenge Registered Dietitians (R.D.) just returned from the American Dietetic Association’s Food and Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE). I’m excited to share the latest food news and emerging trends in HKC’s picks for “Top Food News from FNCE!”
#1. Current research demonstrates that healthy eating and physical activity prevent Type 2 Diabetes in those at risk. At least 10 educational sessions addressed some aspect of diabetes prevention or management.
#2. Innovations in nutrition education included using theater and community-based games to teach nutrition in elementary schools. In addition, new USDA nutrition messages motivate Moms to make more healthful food choices (increase consumption of fruits, vegetables or low-fat milk products).
#3. Sustainable practices in food systems, including eco-friendly cooking strategies and nutrient-rich foods that are good for people, the community, and the planet.
#4. New food labeling systems and laws: Some experts say there are too many icons and systems on the grocery store shelves that make it confusing, while others say there aren’t enough. New menu label laws in New York City and California were also a hot topic.
